from the context menu. Choose keyword and name, click ok and done! For example if you choose “d” for duckduckgo, the next time you want to search duckduckgo, simply type d elf+disco+svarlbard into the search/ address bar to find all about this exciting topic.

Draggable tabs

You can now drag tabs between windows or drag them out to create a new one. Of course you cannot drag between private and non-private windows.

I’m themeing of a white christmas

Opera 18 is now themeable. You can download themes from Opera add-ons. If you want to create a theme to promote your company, favourite band, football team or photographs of otters, read our tutorial Themes in Opera 18+.

What’s next?

In the next two weeks, we’ll promote the experimental Opera Developer to feature-complete Opera Next so you can try out a new stuff. In the meantime, please let us know how Opera 18 works out for you!

Opera Developer 19.0.1324.0 update

The Battlefield 4 plug-in crash have been resolved. Now on to the next great battle:

Opera Sync

Synchronize Opera

Experimental synchronization support can be enabled in flags: opera://flags/#sync. After enabling the flag, you can find Synchronize in the main menu.

You can login with your social network of choice or your Opera Account.

Initially, only Speed Dials, Stash item, and custom search providers will be synchronized. Support for synchronizing other data and settings will come later.

BIG BADASS DATA LOSS WARNING: The servers operate under no guarantee of even attempting to function properly. Your data may be lost or corrupted or the servers made inaccessible at any point in time. Keep a local backup! For your own (and our debugging) sake! Please submit as detailed as possible bug reports containing as much data as you can offer. PS: Do not try to enable sync on Opera 18 or older builds. It will not be pretty.

Usage statistics

You may be prompted to opt-in to voluntarily share statistics information with Opera Software. The information collected will include details on how you configure and how often you use features in Opera. The data will be used in aggregate to guide future development. No personal data — such as name, location/IP, or visited URLs — will be collected.

Highlights

  • Battlefield 4 plug-in crash fixed
  • Experimental synchronization support
  • Opt-in usage data sharing
  • Quick-Access Bar renamed to Bookmarks Bar

Known problems

  • DNA-13623: Default Speed Dials can be deleted when synced if region settings are changed
  • DNA-13546: Speed Dial folders consisting only of extensions can be deleted when syncing

Opera 17 wins Macworld UK Editors’ Choice

Macworld Editors Choice Yesterday Opera 17 became Macworld UK’s Editors’ Choice for desktop browsers, receiving the maximum possible 5 stars!

This is the first time we have been Editors’ Choice, knocking Safari off the coveted top spot. It also follows hot on the heels of Coast winning three awards in one night!

The review notes that Opera was the fastest Mac browser, it looks pretty and they highlighted the Discover, Stash and Off-Road features as being particularly handy.

The review also spoke about our promotion of the Speed Dial as the primary way to organise favourite sites stating, “This is a somewhat bold move, although it makes a lot of sense” and later “the Bookmarks bar is still a hell of a thing to get rid of”. I think we can agree with him on this. We continue to believe that Speed Dial works best for most people but for certain use cases a bookmarks bar does make sense, which is why users will be able to optionally switch it back on in future Opera versions. It is a shame we can’t get 5.5 stars in the future, since this was the only potential downside listed in the entire review.

The Desktop team is now off to eat some well deserved cake!

New Opera Developer 19.0.1310.0 update

The new changelog page could do most of the talking this time. However, I do want to highlight the new Task Manager.

The Task Manager can be found up in the Developer menu. The manager will show all the browser’s processes. Processes can be terminated from the bottom of the manager. The manager will show some information about each process; including their current memory to the left, processor, and network usage to the right.

There have also been some changes on the settings page.

Highlights

  • New Task Manager

Operation Day’s Work 2013

Yesterday we had three extra guys helping out with testing in Desktop. Here is a little summary of their day at Opera:

Nicolas, Jonathan, and Stian

“We are three students from Berg Upper Secondary School (located near Opera Software’s Oslo HQ). Through a Scandinavian school program called Operation Day’s Work, we have chosen to donate a normal day of our education to work for a charity. Our salaries for our day’s work will be donated to improve schools in Guatemala. This year’s program goal is to prevent child-criminality by improving school offerings. The day is voluntary, but we chose to work because we believe we can make a difference.

We chose to work at Opera because Opera seems to be a fun place; and we were right. The community here is outstanding and we were warmly welcomed. Being an international workplace, the whole office was decorated for Halloween. The first thing we noticed was that everyone was wearing casual clothes and the atmosphere were more relaxed than we expected.

The first thing that we got to enjoy was a tour around the building from the Desktop guys. We were then shown the test-lab which would be our office for the day. We were assigned the task of testing Opera 19 Developer. It was tricky and complicated work.

After a couple of hours it was time for lunch, and we got to see the canteen where Opera employees enjoys great lunches every day, this day we got roasted ham, sauerkraut, potatoes and gravy. It was delicious.

It’s important to take breaks once in a while, and Opera has a wide varieties of activities, for example a room filled with a treadmill, exercise bike, and a fussball table. We had two intense and close matches amongst ourselves before returning to work. All in all the day was perfect.”

There is a new option ‘Advanced settings’ under opera:settings-> Browser. It controls ‘Use hardware acceleration when available (requires Opera restart)’ under System and ‘Disable tab bar’s top spacing when browser window is maximized’ under User Interface.

More options for power-users will be introduced over time.
